Comparison of Adjectives

Përshkrimi i njësisë:

Learning about adjectives and comparison of adjectives.

Adjectives are words that describe the qualities or states of being of nouns: beautiful, polite, yellow, fun, fast.

Adjectives tell the reader how much or how many of something you’re talking about, which thing you want passed to you, or which kind of something you want.

  • Why do we use Comparative adjectives? Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between the two objects they modify (larger, smaller, faster, higher, more beautiful, more generous). They are used in sentences where two nouns are compared, in this pattern:
  • Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object).
  • We use the comparative form of an adjective to compare two things.

Example:  Both John and his brother play football, but John is better.

My house is larger than his.  His mother is more generous than his father.

  • Why do we use Superlative adjectives? Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object which is at the upper or lower limit of a quality (the tallest, the smallest, the fastest, the highest, the most famous, the most expensive). They are used in sentences where a subject is compared to a group of objects.
  • Noun (subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun (object).

We use the superlative form of an adjective or adverb to compare three or more things.

Example: John and his two brothers all play football, but John is the best.

My house is the largest house in the town. His mother is the most generous  mother I have seen.
